Sculptures by the sea '18
Every year we try but not every year do we succeed in getting to the sculptures at Cottesloe, but this year we made it and what a ripper day it was. A nice train trip to Perth town and another to Fremantle, but getting off the train two stations early and then walking over a hill till we reach Cottesloe beach.
We started with one named Glacier which was by
Canberran native Michael Le Grand,
it looks pretty colorful and it got the kiddies eye.
This one was entered by prominent Yemen-born, Israeli artist based in London Zadok Ben-David. It's called Sunny Moon and looks pretty cool, The hand cut corten steel sculpture suggests a silhouette of a tree, in the shape of a moon... Yeah.
This one looks cool it was by Simon Youngleson who grew up in the east coastal city of Durban in South Africa, where he spent his life becoming an ardent surfer and fisherman, sleeping under the stars as a teenager listening to the wind and waves. Years latter he relocated to Queenstown in New Zealand and later to Perth, Australia in 1998 where he lives and works today. His sculpture is named Resonating Circles and explores the resonance of a sequence of circles, in ratio, all embedded in the design of the human form... Okay! and it looks good.
Now this one could be my winner, winner chicken dinner! ha,ha. I love it and you can see a lot of work has gone into it. It's named Waiting in the Wings and was made by local Bayswater artist Denise Pepper, It took 12 months to complete and each wing is 3.3 meters tall and weighs in at about 170kg each... crikey! She says 'Wings represented that idea of something better for everybody and aspiring for something bigger and better and something peaceful'.
Here's one that's a bit left of center and looks like a lot of fun, it's Damien Hirst Looking for Sharks, and was made by British artist Damien Hirst. With Cottesloe named as one of the top locations for unprovoked shark attacks in Australia, it’s just the place for Hirst to come when he feels like reprising his best-known creation.
The Elder is a sculpture by our local artist Ron Gom
boc, who has a Sculpture Gallery in Middle swan. He's well know around The swan Valley, and has heaps of these sculptures about the place. This one by the way is priced at $88,000 .... Crikey!
This little ripper is by West Australian Tania Spencer who often makes large scale knitted installations from fencing wire and embroiders heavy wire onto metal canvases, using rural or recycled materials in her art practice. This one is named Inspired by Rosie, and is a bit cheaper then Gomboc's coming in at $13,500.
This one was Chase n' Oscar's favorite and is called Welding Iron Sculpture and was made by Thai artist Naidee Changmoh.
This one was Sarah's favorite... or should I say OMG! And yes it is and it's called Keizo Ushio, and it's made by 66 year old Japanese artist Oushi Zokei. And fairdinkum if I had money to burn I might even buy this one, it's carved out of granite so it must be as hard as a rock! ha,ha.
And our last photo of the day was this one called Swirling Surround and was made by B. Jane Cowie, who has been working with glass for 25 years. This sculpture won the $5000 EY People's Choice Prize for her interactive sculpture, which was made up of 999 ARTglass fish in a dome shaped structure. Now we did walkabout around the beach and saw heaps more sculptures, but we just can't fit all of them into this post. It was a nice warm day and it's days like this that we just love living in Perth, and with a sausage sizzle under the belt we walked back over the hill and down to the train station.... Then off to Freo.
