Silverton Hotel
On our trip over to Toronto we did our normal stopover at Silverton Hotel, which I reckon all people traveling through Broken Hill should do. Here is Harrison standing next to a Mad Max hotted up VW, this is one real beaut aussie hotel.
Here is my boys Oscar, Chase, Harry and Jacko hanging out inside the Hotel, as you can see the two older boys are like there old man and are enjoying a cold beer. The original single story hotel was opened in 1884, to cater for the towns growing horde of miners. A two storey model replaced this, only one year later as the growing Silverton population became increasingly thirsty. The building burnt down in 1918 and the then used Silverton Post Office became the current Silverton Hotel.
Looking at the main bar in the hotel as you can see there got more spirits then you can point a stick at, and of cause a fair few beers to chose from. There has been so many films, commercials and television shows filmed there that today, no one knows the exact number. If you have seen Mad Max ll, Razorback, A town Like Alice, Dirty Deeds, The Craig, Mission Impossible II, Strangerland, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert or countless other films, you’ve seen the Silverton Hotel.
There's been a few changes since the last time yours truly has been here, and one of them is they have closed in the left side of the pub. This area used to be a outside veranda to sit and have a beer, yes you can still sit here and sink a beer but it's mainly used as a part of the restaurant sitting.
On the other side of the Pub is the old undercover beer-garden which was here in the old days but seems to be a lot bigger now, and has a 'you beaut' stage for passing bands to play on. There's also an area for a spit roast to be cooked, just imagine sitting back there in the arvo with a cold beer in one hand and smelling a roast cooking away in the background.
And like I said isn't this a real beaut stage for bands to play on, it has a real bush aussie feel about the whole thing.
Jacko with the cockatoo Jacko just behind him we actually meet Jacko the bird (that is) a few years ago, it was living at Penrose Park which is near by so I guess they moved him to the Pub.
This is arguably, one of the most photographed iconic pubs in outback Australia, and if you find yourself outside the pub on a ripper day. You simply must grab that important photo of your car in front of the Silverton Hotel.
