Day 5 on the road again...
Bulloo Creek to
Florida Rest Area
(684kms)
A bloody bottler of a day greeted us in the morning as we packed up our tents, just have a gander at that photo for a minute...
how could you not have a spring in your step with a ripper morning sky like that.
So nice and early we hit the border between the cockroach country and the crow eaters, but we wanted to get the photo done so we could get a wiggle on as our tummies were rumbling and Macca's was calling.
Chase outside the Border gate cafe but it was closed as it was bloody early...
So after a quick hundred kilometers we drove into Broken Hill and our first stop was up the hill at the Miners Memorial, which sits atop the 'line of load' (the big hill of dirt where the Broken hill used to be).
It's a memorial to the 700+ miners who have died here since the 1800's when the mines began, as you can see it was a bloody ripper day without a cloud in the sky. We did have a faulty battery in the car so we went driving for a battery shop, and without much problems we replaced it and then drove out to Silverton for a bit of sight seeing.
And our first stop in Silverton is no other then the world famous Silverton Hotel, over the years this has begun to be a must stop for the family. As you can see there is an old Vintage VW beetle car, which has been pimped out like one of the cars from the Mad Max movies.
Yours truly and the older boys having a hard earned beer inside this world famous Hotel, inside the pub photos of the many films, television shows and adverts adorn the walls. And a ripper beer garden just makes this pub a must do if your heading to Broken hill, and of-cause you can sink a few coldies while your there.
Here is Jacko outside the Mad Max Museum which is just walking distance from the Hotel, as I said before the movie was set around Silverton so there's sets and props inside the museum. But unfortunately it wasn't open so we just had a gander from the outside.
The old emu VW that is parked outside one of the art studios which are found around the town, in the old days the town was famous for its role in silver mining but these days it's art stuff and of-cause the Pub.
So now we drove out to the Mundi Mundi Lookout where the sight was used in Mad Max 2, and really if you were going to drive out to Silverton you must take the extra nine kilometers to see this lookout... It's a must.
and while we were they the boys used Eddie Jr (Harry's drone) to capture some footage, so here's Eddie Jr in mid flight with the Mundi Mundi in the background.
we had a gander at Silverton's graveyard just to have a sticky beak, I tell you what these people must of lived a hard life out here. So with Silverton done we drove back to the hill, and after another macca's feed in our tummies we set off out of town towards the Cobar goats.
After a full days driving in and around Broken hill we finally hit Cobar just before sun down, where we hit the IGA for some sangs and to top up on barbie sauce. Two of the most important items if your about to have a bbq, especially if your out in the middle of nowhere with some nosy Cobar goats.
The Cobar mining museum was closed as it has been every time we have driven passed Cobar, but we still have enough sunlight to get a few more kilometers in before getting into our bbq.
Chase helping set up our BBQ as Harry is cooking our steaks and yours truly just sitting back saying to myself 'How's the serenity'
So with our camp set up and our tummies full of bbq steak and snags washed down with a Dingo beer, I laid back in my tent and listened to the restful quietness that is our outback Australia... Oh and the occasional Cobar goat baa....
