Sculptures by the sea 2017

Well it was that time of year again when I get the kiddies in the Tarrago , and head to the sea at Cottesloe for the sculptures by the sea. But this year we decided to do something different and catch the train to Perth, and then another one to Fremantle to finish of the day.

And what a bloody ripper day we had for our yearly trip to cottesloe, and as you should know by now Cottesloe put on this community event every year. Each year over seventy local, interstate and a fair few from overseas artists, chuck their sculptures on and around the beach for the locals and tourist to have a gander at. This one is called 'Luke' by Tony Cragg, personally I thought it looked more like a Bob but who am I to question a notso starving artist.

This one called 'I put a moon on the table but it's cracked'... Okay... It is by Japanese artist Yoshio Nitta, actually I like this one but then again anything made out of metal or wood, but with the crack it just gives it that interesting look.

This one is by Albany man Tony Davis and is called 'Divestments 4', not sure what it's about but it's wood and it's stuck in the ground... I love it! I reckon it would look beaut in my backyard, maybe the kids would fall off it with the odd broken arm but it still looks beaut.

Hay I love this one it's 'The Great Hammerhead' by Narembeen WA Sculptor Jordan Sprigg, who actually comes across as a real beaut aussie bush bloke. There's a write-up about him on the ABC website, just click here, and it was the kiddies most liked one.

Then we come to the 'Tears of Joy' which is by Melbourne based sculptor Ben Fasham, made from using stainless steel and bronze.

The mob out on the cotts breakwater just sitting back and taking in the view, with the old Cottesloe Indiana Tea House in the background Fairdinkum it really is a nice beach.

As we left the breakwater we came across this sculpture which is named 'Leaden Hearts' , by Perth sheilah Denise Pepper who also picked up the WA Sculptor scholarship of $10,000 for this one. Crikey not a bad earner if you can get it, she also gets a free trip across the Nullabor to show her boat at the Bondi beach sculptures this year.

Here's a strange looking one called 'Homo Sapiens Sapiens' and

by Chinese artist now living in Perth Desmond Mah, not really to my liking but the kiddies liked it.

Now this one looks real cool hay it's named 'Narration of the Sea', and is by another Chinese artist Lei Huan. Now this one is a real beauty with all the different colours, and of cause being made out of stainless steel gets my thumbs up.

Here's Chase sowing us 'Homeless', another one I like.

Then a short walk from the beach we came across this little ripper 'Mountains Air - Circles', which is made by Japanese (now living in Gosford) artist Koichi Ishino.

Usually you sit on the grass beneath the tall Norfork pines near the Indiana Tea House, and just have a nice lazy look across the Indian Ocean. But in this case Sarah sits on a sculpture, looking at a lazy dopey bugger with a camera. This sculpture is called 'Please don't sit on it' ha,ha no it's not it's called 'Dearest' by a sheilah from the convict settlement of Norfork Island Margarita Sampson. So having her sculpture sitting under the magnificent Norfork Pines, would be a just deserved treat for such a nice beaut sculptress.

And with the ripper rainbow lorikeets chatting away in the trees, we come to our last sculpture for the day. And isn't it a little ripper it's called 'Origins' by Karl Meyer who says 'expresses unfolding and growth, building a visual sense of nurturing, opening and expansion. It is evocative of the wider natural world from the microscopic to the cosmos'. And on that note it was time for us to take the short walk to the train station, and head into Fremantle to continue our sculpture day out.
